Ian Allan's 20th Century Railways

book

An Ian Allan Railway ABC inventory from 1942 onwards. Revised April 2016. Richard Cunningham, Richmond, Virginia, USA A retired Brit from USA, returned to his teenage passion - UK railways, with a particular affection for the Ian Allan ABC series and the Platform 5 publications. I have a complete collection of their spotters books from 1942, the subject of my first book. I also enjoy restoring ABCs. I am an enthusiastic ebay buyer of old and damaged Ian Allan railway books. I started to sell restored copies in January 2011. I make no claims about their investment value although I hope they will come to be regarded as great value collectors items in their own right; items which are accessible to folks with a limited budget. I lovingly restore them. Quality restored editions are very pleasing to own and to handle without fear of spine damage and they come with the option to return them in a timely manner for a full refund. I have restored 104 with 100% satisfaction as at the end of June 2013.

The ABCs of Southern Locomotives 1942-48.
Keynote : Photo Covers and Uniformity of Covers Only four pre-1960 editions were published with photos on the covers - the 11/46 Southern Region 10th above, the 1947 LMS 8th edition and the Southern Electrics 1st and 2nd Editions. The 12th Edition was the first to feature uniformity of design with the other regional editions.

The ABCs of Great Western Locomotives 1943-48.
Keynotes: The LMS and GWR 6th and 7th Editions featured continuous wrap-around covers. It was 20 years before we saw another one - the 1966 CV. The 10th Edition was the second to feature a uniformity of cover design with the other regional editions. The issue is incorrectly recorded on the face page as the 7th edition. It is the 10th edition. There were two print runs differentiated by very different cover shades of green and both printed on paper rather than card stock. The first cover is dark green and is printed on heavy duty paper. The second cover is printed on higher quality art paper and is bright green in colour. The second print is very scarce.

Keynotes:

The 1943 and 1944 editions were the only two CVs to go on general sale during the war years. Only one of the tan examples is known to exist and it is probably an Ian Allan binding for a personal customer. The 1947 example is a personal binding by Ian Allan. A limited number of 1943 editions were produced for friends of Ian Allan, possibly as few as eight. The pages have gilded edges. The order of the parts in the 1943 and 1944 editions was SR-GWR-LMS-LNER, not GWR-SR etc. as in all later editions. Art quality paper was used for the CVs but not the regional editions. The 1943 edition was paginated from 1-218 with an index page and the last two pages were blanks for notes. The part covers were paper, not card. Beginning with the 1944 edition and until the Summer 1957 issue, all Combined Editions were bindings of the separate editions, each part with its original page numbering. The 1944 edition included only one paper part cover — the SR. The page opposite the face page was neatly removed, leaving a 1/4" flap. It is not what is left of a missing first page GWR part cover.
